Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize


The Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun has announced the winners of the twenty-fifth edition of the Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize , established in honor of the author of famous manga such as Astro Boy , Kimba the white lion and Black Jack .

The Grand Prize was won by  Land of Kazumi Yamashita , published in 2014 in the journal Morning of Tokuma Shoten. The story is set in a world where people are sacrificed at their fiftieth birthday, taking them across a mountain, into a mysterious afterlife. In this way civilization protects itself from the fury of the Gods, but this system fails after the sacrifice of a child, the eldest of two twin sisters.

The recognition for the beginners was awarded to the manga  Sousou no Frieren - After the end of the journey , written by  Kanehito Yamada and drawn by Tsukasa Abe , which began last year on the pages of Shogakukan 's  Weekly Shonen Sunday . It is a fantasy that has as its protagonist Frieren, a sorceress ready to live a period of peace after having faced adventures around the world to fight evil; belonging to the long-lived elven race, he will have to deal with the death of all his battle companions. A few weeks ago JPOP announced the Italian edition of the comic, arriving in the second half of 2021.

The award for best short stories was won by  Hiroko Nobara , for two comic stories that the author published with  Kadokawa .In Kieta Mama Tomo and Tsuma wa Kuchi or Kiite Kuremasen  a group of friends, mothers of children who attend the same kindergarten, realize that one of them suddenly stops taking her son to school. Amid gossip and speculation, the women realize they probably didn't know their missing partner that well.

Tsuma wa Kuchi or Kiite Kuremasen  focuses on a family with two children; one day the mother stops talking, saying only the bare essentials, and the others begin to wonder about the reasons for this behavior.

The jury also awarded a special prize to  Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba  by Koyoharu Gotouge , undoubtedly the most successful manga of recent years
